New Year, New Savings

January 3rd, 2007 at 07:39 am

I wonder if anyone will ever read this. This is a new year so it means that my family will have to save money to buy a home. We make a good living. We bring home $16,000 a month after taxes have been taken out. My husband is a physician and I am a teacher. We live in the Los Angeles area where home prices are ridiculous. Currently, we are renting a small 2 bedroom with our one year old son. I just did our budget and we spend about $8500 a month. Crazy right? What the hell are we spending on? I have no idea! Well, we eat out way too much (my fault since I hate cooking and it is hard to do with a one year old!). My husband and I spend too much money on clothes and gifts for others I think. Bascially, we just WASTE our money. So this is a new year, a new start. My husband is totally clueless about money, how to save, how to invest, etc. so I really have to step up and be the one to be strong about our goal to buy a home.

I'll be updating on how we are doing!

Hi, welcome to the blogs. If you waste that much on eating out, perhaps you should hire a personal chef to do up a bunch of meals for the freezer so all you have to do is thaw, heat and eat. Probably a lot cheaper for you with a good variety of food.

Welcome. Just start listing all money coming in and what is going out on a daily basis so you can see where you can stop the bleeding. It's not uncommon for one of the spouses to be clueless about money. My husband is also. Someone has to start and it looks like it's you and hopefully after he sees some improvements, he'll catch on. Anyway, we are so glad to have you here.

Welcome and congrats on your start in making a new future. Since you hate cooking every day, how about once a month cooking? Or once a week? You create your menus ahead of time, buy all the ingredients, and spend a whole day cooking and freezing up meals for later reheating. I have seen several cookbooks for once a month cooking and I used to do once a week cooking, like making up a stew or soup and a casserole for a whole week's worth of meals. It was great and saved us a ton of money.
